Lots of people own an iPhone, but many of them still have difficulties putting music, videos and other resources onto iPhone. Below are some methods to guide you in placing such files into the iPhone.

Steps

Music and videos from Limewire
  1. Search and download songs from Limewire. You may get songs in all sorts of formats, but not all formats are supported by iPhone. The iPhone supports these three formats: MP3, AAC and M4A. Music of these formats can be directly transferred to iPhone using iTunes.
  2. Open iTunes, click “File” from the upper left corner, select “Add file to library”, browse your computer hard drive and find the songs downloaded by Limewire, select the songs you prefer, click OK and the songs will be put in your iTunes. Then you can just transfer the songs to your iPhone from iTunes.
Youtube videos Youtube videos are in FLV formats, so use a free online FLV converter to do the conversion:
  1. Go to Youtube and open the page of the video you want to put on your iPhone. And you will find the Youtube URL of this video to the right of the playback window. Copy this URL using your mouse. You can see the URL of a particular video in the URL box.
  2. Go to http://vixy.net/, paste the copied URL into the URL field of the web page, and select “MP4 for iPod/PSP” from the “Converts to” drop-down list. (iPod Video could also be used on iPhone. This will save you a lot effort if you have many iPod videos). Then click “Start” below this list to start the conversion.
  3. Download the converted video after the conversion. The website will provide a download link for you to download the converted MP4 file. When you see the link, you can just download the final file from the link, save the downloaded MP4 file on your computer and use iTunes to sync it on to your iPhone.
Google Videos on iPhone Google allows you to download videos (well, mostly) from their site in an iPhone compatible format, all you need to do is download that version of the video.
  1. Go to Google Video] and search for a video as you normally would. Click the select list on the right and select "Video iPod/Sony PSP" and press "Done". Press Download and the video will come up shortly. Simple, right?
Watching Movies, Sports, Music Videos or any other videos you already own
  1. The first step in watching videos that you already own is to get them on your computer. If its a dvd just pop it into your computers dvd rom drive. Next you will need to get a dvd ripper this will allow you to put the dvd movie into your computer's hard drive. This will take sometime depending on what dvd ripper you have. (If you already have the videos that you want to watch on your iphone on your computer's hard drive go to Step 2)
  2. To watch the videos on your iphone you will need to convert the videos you already have to the iphone format. For this you will need an iphone video converter or any other program that converts video files to .mp4 (H.264 encoding) because this the only format of video that the iphone plays. This will also take a while depending on how big your video file is and how good your iphone video converter is.
    • Now before you continue on putting the video files onto your iphone make sure all of them are in the proper iphone format. You do not need to worry about this if you used a video converter that converts videos to iphone format.
  3. After you've ripped and converted all the videos you want all that is left to do is to actually put it on your iphone. This is by far the easiest step and takes the least time because this can be done right from itunes. All you need to do connect your iphone to the computer. Then open up itunes scan the video files into the itunes library and then put the videos files right from itunes to your iphone or ipod video.
The Simple Shortcut Secrets
  1. The first shortcut is that there are some websites on the Internet which allows you to download movies, sports, music videos and other videos for the iphone directly from their site for free after you pay a one time fee. The good thing about these websites is that the videos you download will already come in the iphone format. This means you do not need to rip or convert the videos which will save a lot of time.
  2. The second shortcut is youtube. Youtube and Apple have devolved a close partnership. Now you can watch the videos on youtube encoded with the H264 format directly on your iphone By the end of this month youtube will have over 10,000 videos which you can watch your iphone. Furthermore you will also be able to download these videos via EDGE or Wi-Fi connection.

Warnings

  • You may need to "jailbreak" your iphone to download 3rd party applications. Be sure to unlock the iphone 3G properly.

Recently, the US copyright law has been modified to make it legal to hack (jailbreak) smartphones such as the iPhone to switch telecommunications service providers or to install applications without Apple's approval.[1] But is it worth it? Many people who have never had their phone jail broken before can now do so. Using jailbreakme.com, a free browser-based jailbreak system, you only have to visit the site and your iPhone is jailbroken. Don't be afraid to try it out now because this is possible. But be aware there are caveats.

Steps

  1. Do a back-up from your iPhone. Before you jailbreak your phone, be sure to sync with iTunes to back your phone up. This is just in case anything goes wrong.
  2. On your iPhone, open the browser. Type http://jailbreakme.com into the address bar and press "Go".
  3. Slide the "slide to jailbreak" slide. Wait until your device downloads the jailbreak application. How long this will take depends on how fast your connection is; it can take up to five minutes.
    • Once you see that the app "Cydia" is installed on your device, your device has been jail broken. It will appear as a pop-up.
  4. Press "OK" and you will return to your springboard. Cydia will now appear there alongside your other apps. You are now free to download unapproved apps and tweaks not officially approved by Apple.
  5. If you encounter any problems, try to reboot your device. In the worst-case scenario, you can always restore your device with iTunes and jail break again.
Method 2 (Jailbreakme V2)
  1. Sync your iPhone/iPod with iTunes.
  2. Go to www.jailbreakme.com with the iDevice itself
  3. Press "Install"
  4. Sit back and relax.
  5. Cydia will be added to your Springboard.
  1. Congrats! You have jailbroken your iDevice!
  2. Recommended apps: Winterboard — to change your phone theme, BytaFont — to change your system font.

Tips

  • If something goes wrong or the installer crashes during installation, it may not be fixed by simply restoring your phone and trying again. Jailbreakme.com will continue to attempt installation but will crash and put you back at your home screen. A proven fix for this (and a lot of other problems) is to restore your phone to factory defaults. Be warned as this will erase everything on the phone.
  • It has been advised to first update your device to iOS 4.0.1 before attempting to jailbreak with Jailbreakme. The older versions could give you some trouble.
  • This method works for all devices described here:
    • iPod 1G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 2G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 2G on 4.0
    • iPod 3G on 3.1.2
    • iPod 3G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 3G on 4.0
    • iPad on 3.2
    • iPad on 3.2.1
    • iPhone 3G on 3.1.2
    • iPhone 3G on 3.1.3
    • iPhone 3G on 4.0
    • iPhone 3G on 4.0.1
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 3.1.2
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 3.1.3
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 4.0
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 4.0.1
    • iPhone 4 on 4.0
    • iPhone 4 on 4.0.1 [2]
  • Back up your data onto a computer, just in case your information and files are lost.

Warnings

  • You should be tech-savvy enough to keep up with the methods of updating your phone and what will and won't cause problems for you- such as attempting updates to iTunes or your iPhone.
  • While this method is not malicious, there are malware-spreading campaigns preying on people looking to jailbreak their phones.See this article for example
  • As with all "jailbreaks" there is a risk that something may go wrong which could "brick" your phone (make it inoperable). Your warranty will not cover this, leaving you with little more than an expensive "brick", hence the term.
  • Be aware that jailbreaking your phone will allow you to run apps that have not been "approved"- this also includes malware and virus apps.
  • This method uses an exploit of a security hole in the iPhone's web browser, which will undoubtedly be patched by Apple in the next release.
  • Service providers purchase the rights to certain features on phones bearing their logos. Not all features of your phone may work on another provider's network. Consider the risks and you may find yourself losing money- and features.
  • As always, be careful if you jailbreak your device, Apple can and will void any warranty if your device crashes after it has been jail broken.[3]

Are you a big fan of YouTube? If you're anything like me, then you endlessly spend the day looking for the newest and funniest video clips uploaded. Well, thanks to Apple's iPhone, we YouTube addicts now have our golden fleece. The iPhone lets us enjoy YouTube wherever we are. One of the best functions that Apple is using to sell the iPhone is its online video watching capabilities through YouTube. This allows iPhone owners to watch any video they want from a library of millions with a constant stream of new ones being uploaded everyday. What's great is that users can explore all these new videos and old favorites without learning a whole new search process. The video quality of wi-fi is much, much better than EDGE, so don't get confused when the picture gets blurry and takes longer to load.

Steps

  1. To begin with touch or tap the "YouTube" icon from the main screen of your iPhone. The icon should look like a tiny television on your screen. Touching this directs you to YouTube's main page.
  2. Once you're on the main page of YouTube, find the "Search" button to get started. One common mistake most beginner iPhone users make is when typing in keywords; they forget to lightly touch the space for YouTube keywords. There needs to be contact with the keyword field or you're doing a lot of typing for nothing.
  3. Use either specific or broad keywords to find any new videos on YouTube's site. The iPhone's virtual keypad makes it quite simple type in words that can help you locate any specific video you want.
  4. Now that you on the "Search Results" page, highlight the icon labeled "Video" of a YouTube result that may work for you search query. To access the video, use your index finger to press down on the icon. Any accompanying information the video has will be displayed.
  5. Begin the quick play options by tapping the "Play" icon for the selected video.
  6. By touching the space outside of the main video screen of the iPhone, you can access the YouTube and iPhone video tools. Tools, such as "Rewind" and "Fast Forward", allow you to watch the video at your own pace. There is also a sliding bar which lets you pick any spot in the video to start from or go back to.
  7. The iPhone also allows to you to create your own YouTube icons and video tool bar with the "Edit" tool. This feature is found by clicking on the "More" icon at the top of the phone.

Video

Tips

  • If you are using EDGE, and instead of viewing the video, it says it cannot contact the server, try to hold the iPhone without touching the antenna (black bottom part on the back) as phone signals have a harder time to go through bones.

FaceTime is Apple's video chatting application that's built into the iPhone 4 and subsequent generations, as well as the iPad 2 and subsequent generations. With the push of a button and wireless or 3G connection, you can see your friend in a video chat no matter how many miles apart you are.

Steps

  1. Press the home button and unlock your screen. On your homepage, click on the "Phone" icon to open up your contact book.
  2. Find the friend whom you want to FaceTime in your Favorites or Contacts section. Click on their name to open their contact entry on your phone. Then click on the "FaceTime" button.
  3. You will start calling your friend. Wait for your phones to connect over the Internet and for your friend to answer.
  4. When the video call connects, your friend will be presented with the option to accept or decline your call.
  5. Once both parties are in the call, you will be able to see your friend in the main screen and yourself in a smaller picture. There are three buttons at the bottom: mute the call (so you can hear them but they can't hear you), end the call, and switch to the front or back camera.

Tips

  • The screenshots for this article were taken with an iPhone 4, but the steps are very similar for other generations of the iPhone.
  • FaceTime works better when both parties have a reliable wireless connection. 3G will suffice for short FaceTime video chats, but the application may demand too much data to maintain a reliable 3G connection.
  • If you are stuck without wireless and only have 3G or 4G, consider downloading the Tango Video Calls app. It works with smartphones and tablets, and claims to support a better connection over 3G and 4G than FaceTime.
  • It's helpful to stand your iPhone up against something (e.g., a shelf) if you want to sit and video chat someone, so you don't have to keep holding your phone an arm's length away from your face.

Warnings

  • Using FaceTime on 3G or 4G may incur large data usage charges. Make sure you have ample remaining data in your monthly plan before you use FaceTime without a wireless connection.
