GPS, or Global Positioning System, originally developed for the military, has since become a staple of modern life for so many. It can pinpoint our location in 3D. space with an accuracy of just a few feet or meters. We may not always know how we got where we are, but do we know where we are, and how long it will take us to get where we're going. Thanks to our smart phones, we can let other people know where we are, too! This article will show you a few ways to make that happen, and why that's generally a good thing. EditSteps

1Understand the benefits. There are many reasons to use GPS-based location services. As a parent, you may want to locate a teen that has missed curfew. Are they at the school, or with a trusted friend, or in that part of town? As an employer, you may wish to monitor the movements of your employees during work hours. Will Sandy in truck 7 be able to reach the warehouse in time with that traffic jam, or an alternate route make more sense? Why is Pat still parked out by the golf course? Lunch was over 2 hours ago! As a consumer, you may be hungry for lunch and want to know where the Starbucks nearest you is. And oh, by the way—where the closest gas station is! GPS tracking can also prove useful in crisis situations, as many wireless networks allow emergency services teams to receive information from cell phones that have been used to contact them for help.

2Determine the best service. Whatever the reason for using GPS tracking services to find a mobile device, there are many resources and methods that assist in the process. Location sharing enables cell phone users to broadcast their whereabouts within the social media framework. Virtually all the primary social media players include location sharing as part of their feature set: Yelp!, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ Local, Foursquare—all of these encourage users to tag their location when they post status updates.

Many corporate entities are now investing in the proprietary development of social media and networking services that enable employees to voluntarily share location information with coworkers and management. Voluntary tracking involves smart phone features or a cellular service plan that includes tracking of the device via Web browser or other mobile device. These services allow users to set up alerts and configure accounts to pinpoint locations of other users in a certain approved area or send a message when users travel outside of a set parameter. Don't like Peggy Sue crossing out of the dry county on Friday nights? Set an alert! If she crosses 110th Avenue heading south, you receive a text message and shortly thereafter, Peggy Sue gets a call—from you! 3Choose a cellular network service provider that offers GPS-enabled devices. While some providers of smartphones offer tracking services as a standard feature, basic phones and plans may not include this functionality. For example, AT&T offers a service called FamilyMap. With this paid service you can track, at any time, the location of a family member. They will be notified that you are tracking them, so you won't be able to surprise them—but it may give you peace of mind knowing your child got home from school each day.

If you have a current cellular contract, inquire about adding tracking features to your plan and upgrade to GPS-enabled devices if the option exists. If you are in the market for a new service, weigh all of your options and research consumer sources to get advice and ratings information that can aid in the selection of the most advantageous offer and most cost-effective plan for your needs. Compare devices, as well as tracking services, to ensure that you choose the most compatible options for simple tracking of family members or complex services, such as international traveler tracking.

4Match the appropriate device with the required technology and start tracking. Once you have the right tools and the user’s consent, you need only to keep the GPS tracking option enabled. You can GPS track a cell phone by permitting GPS data to be collected by the cell phone and transmitted via the network you choose. Your installed technology will communicate via web-based services to maps and the software will report the user’s location to the online service. Depending upon the device used and the tracking purposes, you may need a monthly subscription to a tracking service in addition to installation of technology on a GPS-enabled phone. You will also need to ensure that the user keeps the tracking function enabled for constant location. EditVideo

EditTips

You can research and install applicable technology using video tutorials and free services if you want to try GPS tracking before adding the functionality to your existing plan. Ensure that if you are paying for tracking services that all parties involved—tracker (parent, employer, spouse) and mobile user (child, employee, spouse)—agree to keep the tracking device activated or vow to not tamper with or disable the device. Inquire about and use corporate services—many of which are offered by providers of popular smartphones used by large organizations to communicate effectively with a massive global workforce. These services are customizable based on the models of phones and the business requirements of the users. EditWarnings

Secret tracking, though illegal, is the practice of tracking cell users without their knowledge and/or consent. These services are not available via legitimate mobile services providers.

The Apple iPhone 3G is one of the most versatile smart phones on the market. However, it is only available on AT&T in North America and select carriers worldwide. You can unlock a 3G iPhone and remove the SIM card restriction so that it will work on other 3G networks. In order to unlock an iPhone, you must first jailbreak the iOS device. Jailbreaking an iPhone allows you to install unofficial software on your device, such as unlock tools.

Steps

  1. Install the latest version of iTunes. You should first check the Dev-Team Blog website (see Sources) to verify that the latest versions of their jailbreak tools are compatible with the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Obtain a download bundle for the latest iOS version. Jailbreak tools usually are written for the latest version of iOS.
    • Conduct an Internet search for "Download iOS for iPhone 3G."
    • Select a reputable site (such as ihackintosh.com) and download the appropriate .ipsw file for your 3G. If you are an iPhone developer, or know someone who is, you can obtain this file through the Apple iOS Developer Program.
    • Save this file in an easily accessible location, such as your Desktop folder.
  3. Download the latest version of PwnageTool.
    • Make sure you have torrent software installed so that you will be able to download the necessary installation files.
    • Go to the Dev-Team Blog.
    • Click the "PwnageTool Info" link and follow the instructions for downloading the executable.
    • Once downloaded, launch the installation file and follow the prompts.
  4. Launch PwnageTool.
    • Select the 3G image. Click the next arrow.
    • Select the .ipsw bundle that you downloaded in Step 2. Once the software finds the file, it will prompt you to create an .ipsw bundle that you will use to jailbreak the iPhone.
    • Follow the onscreen prompts to put your iPhone 3G in Device Firmware Recovery (DFU) mode.
  5. Open iTunes to complete the iPhone jailbreak.
    • iTunes will detect your iPhone in "recovery mode." Click "OK" to dismiss the popup.
    • On the Devices menu, hold down the Option or Alt key (depending on if you are on Apple OS X or Microsoft Windows) and click "Restore."
    • You should now be prompted to select the .ipsw file you wish to restore from. Select the file you created with PwnageTool (the file name should end with "Custom_Restore").
    • iTunes will restore your iPhone 3G using the custom firmware you created. Once this process is complete, you can safely backup your device and sync your personal information using iTunes.
  6. Launch the Cydia application on your iPhone and search for ultrasn0w. Once found, install ultrasn0w on your device. If ultrasn0w doesn't appear in your search results, follow these steps:
    • Click the "Manage" button on the Cydia home screen and then select "Sources."
    • Click "Edit" and then "Add."
    • Enter "" http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com" into the Cydia/APT URL field and click the "Add Source" button.
    • Once Cydia verifies the URL that you have entered and registers the repository URL, return to the Cydia homescreen and continue installing ultrasn0w.
  7. Wait for your iPhone 3G to reboot. Once ultrasn0w completes the unlocking process, you can use any carrier's SIM card with your device.

Tips

  • If you wish to restore your iPhone to its factory settings after unlocking, use the Restore button in iTunes. Please note, you will lose all personal data, information and applications. You will no longer be able to use applications that were available on your jailbroken iPhone.
  • Apple frequently includes in iOS updates "plugs" for software holes exploited by jailbreak programs. After jailbreaking your iPhone, do not use iTunes to update your device. Check the Dev-Team Blog frequently to determine when and where you should download updates for your device.

Warnings

  • Jailbreaking and unlocking an iPhone are not activities sanctioned by Apple or any of its service partners. If you experience difficulties with your iPhone after unlocking, you must restore it to its factory settings prior to bringing it in for service. While jailbreaking and unlocking an iPhone is legal, Apple considers these actions violations of their end-user license agreement and may deny any service claims.

Refurbished iPhones are phones that have been repackaged by Apple for sale after the product has been returned or exchanged after its initial purchase. Refurbished iPhones have usually been repaired by Apple technicians, and some of these phones may even contain replacement parts if they had been previously defective. Although refurbished phones are certified by Apple to be fully functional and operational, some iPhone vendors or sellers may not be able to determine if a particular iPhone is refurbished. In some cases, iPhone vendors may try to sell you an iPhone under the impression that the device is new and has never been used. To identify a refurbished iPhone, you can examine the iPhone's packaging and review the device's serial number to determine the manufacturing date.

Steps

  1. Look for an "Apple Certified" seal on the packaging. This seal indicates that the iPhone has undergone testing and the refurbishment process by Apple-certified technicians.
  2. Examine the iPhone's box and packaging. Refurbished iPhones will usually be sold in all-white boxes or packaging.
    • If you buy an iPhone that does not have packaging at all, or is not in the iPhone-branded packaging, the iPhone may be refurbished.
  3. Locate the serial number of the iPhone. The serial number contains information that will determine whether or not the device is refurbished.
    • If the iPhone is powered on, go to the Home screen and tap "Settings," then "General," then "About." You can then tap on "Serial Number" from the About screen to locate the iPhone's serial number.
    • If the iPhone is turned off, access the phone's Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card tray to locate the serial number, which is printed directly on the SIM tray. If you are using an original iPhone model, the serial number will be printed on the back case of the phone.
  4. Examine the iPhone's serial number. The digits within a serial number will indicate when the iPhone was manufactured and produced.
    • Determine if the first digit of the serial number is "5." If the device has been refurbished and is "Apple Certified," then Apple will modify the serial number to begin with the number "5."
    • Locate the third digit of the serial number. The third digit indicates the last digit of the year in which the iPhone was manufactured. For example, if the third digit is an "8," the iPhone was made in the year 2008. If the third digit is a "0," then the iPhone was manufactured in 2010.
    • Examine the fourth and fifth digits of the serial number. These digits will indicate the week of year in which the phone was manufactured. For example, if the fourth and fifth digits are "51," then the iPhone was made in late December of the year it was manufactured.
    • Although the manufacturing dates within a serial number may not be recent, it is still possible that the iPhone has never been used and has been sitting in its original packaging since its release.

Tips

  • If your iPhone came in an iPhone-branded box, compare the serial number printed on the box with the serial number of the iPhone. If the serial numbers are different, then the box is not the iPhone's original packaging.
  • All refurbished iPhones that are "Apple Certified" have a 1-year limited warranty through Apple, with the option to extend your warranty up to 2 years. Contact Apple directly to verify that the warranty is applicable to your device, especially if you purchased the iPhone from a third-party.
  • If you are buying an iPhone online and cannot inspect the phone in person beforehand, ask the seller questions about the serial number or determine the website's return or exchange policies in the event you are sold a refurbished device.

Lots of people own an iPhone, but many of them still have difficulties putting music, videos and other resources onto iPhone. Below are some methods to guide you in placing such files into the iPhone.

Steps

Music and videos from Limewire
  1. Search and download songs from Limewire. You may get songs in all sorts of formats, but not all formats are supported by iPhone. The iPhone supports these three formats: MP3, AAC and M4A. Music of these formats can be directly transferred to iPhone using iTunes.
  2. Open iTunes, click “File” from the upper left corner, select “Add file to library”, browse your computer hard drive and find the songs downloaded by Limewire, select the songs you prefer, click OK and the songs will be put in your iTunes. Then you can just transfer the songs to your iPhone from iTunes.
Youtube videos Youtube videos are in FLV formats, so use a free online FLV converter to do the conversion:
  1. Go to Youtube and open the page of the video you want to put on your iPhone. And you will find the Youtube URL of this video to the right of the playback window. Copy this URL using your mouse. You can see the URL of a particular video in the URL box.
  2. Go to http://vixy.net/, paste the copied URL into the URL field of the web page, and select “MP4 for iPod/PSP” from the “Converts to” drop-down list. (iPod Video could also be used on iPhone. This will save you a lot effort if you have many iPod videos). Then click “Start” below this list to start the conversion.
  3. Download the converted video after the conversion. The website will provide a download link for you to download the converted MP4 file. When you see the link, you can just download the final file from the link, save the downloaded MP4 file on your computer and use iTunes to sync it on to your iPhone.
Google Videos on iPhone Google allows you to download videos (well, mostly) from their site in an iPhone compatible format, all you need to do is download that version of the video.
  1. Go to Google Video] and search for a video as you normally would. Click the select list on the right and select "Video iPod/Sony PSP" and press "Done". Press Download and the video will come up shortly. Simple, right?
Watching Movies, Sports, Music Videos or any other videos you already own
  1. The first step in watching videos that you already own is to get them on your computer. If its a dvd just pop it into your computers dvd rom drive. Next you will need to get a dvd ripper this will allow you to put the dvd movie into your computer's hard drive. This will take sometime depending on what dvd ripper you have. (If you already have the videos that you want to watch on your iphone on your computer's hard drive go to Step 2)
  2. To watch the videos on your iphone you will need to convert the videos you already have to the iphone format. For this you will need an iphone video converter or any other program that converts video files to .mp4 (H.264 encoding) because this the only format of video that the iphone plays. This will also take a while depending on how big your video file is and how good your iphone video converter is.
    • Now before you continue on putting the video files onto your iphone make sure all of them are in the proper iphone format. You do not need to worry about this if you used a video converter that converts videos to iphone format.
  3. After you've ripped and converted all the videos you want all that is left to do is to actually put it on your iphone. This is by far the easiest step and takes the least time because this can be done right from itunes. All you need to do connect your iphone to the computer. Then open up itunes scan the video files into the itunes library and then put the videos files right from itunes to your iphone or ipod video.
The Simple Shortcut Secrets
  1. The first shortcut is that there are some websites on the Internet which allows you to download movies, sports, music videos and other videos for the iphone directly from their site for free after you pay a one time fee. The good thing about these websites is that the videos you download will already come in the iphone format. This means you do not need to rip or convert the videos which will save a lot of time.
  2. The second shortcut is youtube. Youtube and Apple have devolved a close partnership. Now you can watch the videos on youtube encoded with the H264 format directly on your iphone By the end of this month youtube will have over 10,000 videos which you can watch your iphone. Furthermore you will also be able to download these videos via EDGE or Wi-Fi connection.

Warnings

  • You may need to "jailbreak" your iphone to download 3rd party applications. Be sure to unlock the iphone 3G properly.

Recently, the US copyright law has been modified to make it legal to hack (jailbreak) smartphones such as the iPhone to switch telecommunications service providers or to install applications without Apple's approval.[1] But is it worth it? Many people who have never had their phone jail broken before can now do so. Using jailbreakme.com, a free browser-based jailbreak system, you only have to visit the site and your iPhone is jailbroken. Don't be afraid to try it out now because this is possible. But be aware there are caveats.

Steps

  1. Do a back-up from your iPhone. Before you jailbreak your phone, be sure to sync with iTunes to back your phone up. This is just in case anything goes wrong.
  2. On your iPhone, open the browser. Type http://jailbreakme.com into the address bar and press "Go".
  3. Slide the "slide to jailbreak" slide. Wait until your device downloads the jailbreak application. How long this will take depends on how fast your connection is; it can take up to five minutes.
    • Once you see that the app "Cydia" is installed on your device, your device has been jail broken. It will appear as a pop-up.
  4. Press "OK" and you will return to your springboard. Cydia will now appear there alongside your other apps. You are now free to download unapproved apps and tweaks not officially approved by Apple.
  5. If you encounter any problems, try to reboot your device. In the worst-case scenario, you can always restore your device with iTunes and jail break again.
Method 2 (Jailbreakme V2)
  1. Sync your iPhone/iPod with iTunes.
  2. Go to www.jailbreakme.com with the iDevice itself
  3. Press "Install"
  4. Sit back and relax.
  5. Cydia will be added to your Springboard.
  1. Congrats! You have jailbroken your iDevice!
  2. Recommended apps: Winterboard — to change your phone theme, BytaFont — to change your system font.

Video

A video demonstration of jailbreaking your iPhone.

Tips

  • If something goes wrong or the installer crashes during installation, it may not be fixed by simply restoring your phone and trying again. Jailbreakme.com will continue to attempt installation but will crash and put you back at your home screen. A proven fix for this (and a lot of other problems) is to restore your phone to factory defaults. Be warned as this will erase everything on the phone.
  • It has been advised to first update your device to iOS 4.0.1 before attempting to jailbreak with Jailbreakme. The older versions could give you some trouble.
  • This method works for all devices described here:
    • iPod 1G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 2G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 2G on 4.0
    • iPod 3G on 3.1.2
    • iPod 3G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 3G on 4.0
    • iPad on 3.2
    • iPad on 3.2.1
    • iPhone 3G on 3.1.2
    • iPhone 3G on 3.1.3
    • iPhone 3G on 4.0
    • iPhone 3G on 4.0.1
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 3.1.2
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 3.1.3
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 4.0
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 4.0.1
    • iPhone 4 on 4.0
    • iPhone 4 on 4.0.1 [2]
  • Back up your data onto a computer, just in case your information and files are lost.

Warnings

  • You should be tech-savvy enough to keep up with the methods of updating your phone and what will and won't cause problems for you- such as attempting updates to iTunes or your iPhone.
  • While this method is not malicious, there are malware-spreading campaigns preying on people looking to jailbreak their phones.See this article for example
  • As with all "jailbreaks" there is a risk that something may go wrong which could "brick" your phone (make it inoperable). Your warranty will not cover this, leaving you with little more than an expensive "brick", hence the term.
  • Be aware that jailbreaking your phone will allow you to run apps that have not been "approved"- this also includes malware and virus apps.
  • This method uses an exploit of a security hole in the iPhone's web browser, which will undoubtedly be patched by Apple in the next release.
  • Service providers purchase the rights to certain features on phones bearing their logos. Not all features of your phone may work on another provider's network. Consider the risks and you may find yourself losing money- and features.
  • As always, be careful if you jailbreak your device, Apple can and will void any warranty if your device crashes after it has been jail broken.[3]
